Lucas Digne close to returning to PSG: experience for the left flank

Paris – 13.07.2026: according to consistent media reports, Lucas Digne is close to returning to Paris Saint-Germain. The 32-year-old Aston Villa left-back has reportedly reached an agreement with the capital club on a three-season contract. The transfer is expected to be completed only after the end of the 2026 World Cup, on 19.07.2026, a tournament in which Digne is still involved with France.

On Monday evening, there had been no official confirmation from either PSG or Aston Villa. However, Aston Villa had announced Digne’s contract extension only in August 2025. Reports speak of a release clause that Paris intends to activate after the tournament. The reported transfer fee would be less than ten million euros.

For Digne, it would be a return to familiar surroundings, but under completely different circumstances. From 2013 to 2016, he had already worn the PSG shirt before FC Barcelona signed him. At the time, he was a young, offensively gifted full-back with great drive down the flank; now he would return as an experienced professional after spells with Everton and Aston Villa.

The sporting idea behind the possible deal is clear. PSG have one of Europe’s most dynamic left-backs in Nuno Mendes, but in a particularly demanding role they need a reliable alternative. Digne could provide rotation options and tactical variety: as a classic crosser in a wide setup, as a more cautious full-back, or as an experienced player in tense knockout evenings.

His World Cup, however, keeps the situation on hold. Digne is part of the French squad and has repeatedly been at the centre of decisions regarding the starting lineup during the tournament. FIFA still lists France as competing ahead of the semi-final against Spain. A club transfer completed during the final phase is therefore not an issue; until the tournament concludes, the player’s priority is Didier Deschamps’ national team.

For PSG, the signing would be less of a spectacular revolution than a targeted move to add profile and depth to the squad. Digne knows the demands of a top club, is firmly rooted in French football and brings international experience. Especially alongside Mendes, his experience could prove valuable without substantially rewriting the hierarchy on the left flank.

The formal completion of the deal remains decisive. Until neither Paris Saint-Germain nor Aston Villa have confirmed the agreement, Digne’s return will not be complete. However, the reports paint a clear picture: ten years after his departure, the left-back appears to be preparing for a second chapter in Paris.
