Netflix launches “GIGN”: Tomer Sisley in a French action series

Paris – 22 July 2026: Netflix released the French action series “GIGN” on Wednesday. It centres on a fictional threat targeting the elite unit of the National Gendarmerie itself. Tomer Sisley plays an experienced officer who, after a bloody attack, must not only organise the protection of his comrades but also guide the young recruit Max.

The series thus combines an intervention thriller with a story about responsibility within an isolated special unit. The characters are under pressure because the attack not only endangers lives: it also shakes the unit’s trust and working methods. The plot is fictional and does not depict any real attack against the GIGN.

Tomer Sisley plays the leading role in this production directed by Julien Leclercq. Leclercq had previously directed French action productions and explored a historic GIGN operation in the film “L’Assaut”. With this new series, he returns to a world shaped by tactical interventions, conflicts of loyalty and intense personal pressure.

The title refers to the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group, a special unit of the French Gendarmerie founded in 1974. According to the National Gendarmerie, its real-life missions include counter-terrorism, the management of extreme crises, operations against organised crime, and the protection of particularly threatened individuals and facilities.

The real unit serves as the starting point for the series, but the format remains a fictional drama. The depiction of a targeted attack against the group is primarily intended to test the cohesion of its members. With Max, the series places a novice character alongside an experienced officer, whose training takes place in an acute emergency situation.

According to the National Gendarmerie, the GIGN has around 1,000 members at its Satory site near Versailles, as well as at 14 regional branches in France and overseas territories. The organisation includes divisions dedicated to intervention, observation and investigation, as well as security and protection. This real-life structure underlines why the series places its conflict within a particularly specialised unit.

With “GIGN”, Netflix is betting on a French serial production that presents this subject not as a documentary but as a fiction built around suspense. Today’s launch brings Tomer Sisley back in an action role and also places a young recruit at the centre, whose relationship with his instructor is intended to form the emotional core of the story.
