Patrouille de France in the USA: Formation Flights with the Thunderbirds during Mission “Liberté 250”

Paris – 02.07.2026: The Patrouille de France carried out several joint formation flights and training sequences with the US Air Force Thunderbirds in the United States in June and early July. The appearance is part of Mission “Liberté 250”, organized by the Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace, which takes place from 3 June to 5 July 2026 at various stops marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. According to participating sources, this included program items in the Ocean City (Maryland) area as well as in the Virginia region; teams from France Télévisions accompanied preparations and flights for reporting.

The French side emphasizes the dual nature of the mission: it combines public representation with military cooperation. Aviation demonstrations and joint overflights serve as a showcase for training, discipline and safety standards, while also signaling a close transatlantic partnership. For logistics, an Airbus A400M traveled as an escort and transport aircraft, moving equipment, spare parts and technical personnel between stages. Squadron operations require precise maintenance, detailed airspace coordination and aligned safety procedures — aspects that are regularly practiced in bilateral formats.

Official mission documents list overflights, encounters with the public and combined appearances with US displays as fixed elements. The schedule included, among other items, Ocean City on 13 and 14 June as well as events around 15 June in Virginia. The tour therefore follows earlier joint presentations with US formations such as the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. For France, visibility in the anniversary year is also symbolic: the Patrouille de France represents the air forces at international events and acts as an ambassador for technical precision and flight training.

The operations fit into a dense summer calendar, which traditionally also includes national ceremonies such as 14 July. Security and aviation law matters are handled in close coordination with civil authorities, local organizers and the US armed forces. Photo and video material from the institutions involved documents the joint formations and training segments, and media reports reflect the interest in the rare cooperation of two renowned aerobatic teams.

According to authorities, the mission’s focus remains on public demonstrations, encounters with spectators and professional exchange between the teams. The conclusion of the US leg is scheduled for early July; afterwards the Patrouille de France will return to its home base before taking on further summer duties within France.
