Presidency 2027: At the RN, it’s not just personalities but law and strategy that decide

Paris – 07.07.2026: The judgment of the Cour d’appel de Paris on Marine Le Pen’s appeal in the proceedings over the alleged embezzlement of EU funds is seen as a milestone for the 2027 presidential election. If the court upholds a disqualification, Le Pen could formally be limited in her ability to stand or hold office. In that scenario, party leader Jordan Bardella would move into the foreground as an operationally prepared replacement option. Officially, the Rassemblement National (RN) stresses unity: Le Pen remains the communicative figurehead; in the event of a legal obstacle she would support Bardella “with energy and confidence.”

Strategically, the RN is therefore relying on a dual model. Le Pen stands for name recognition, continuity and a well-practiced campaign routine. Bardella, party president since 2022, embodies a younger appeal and presents himself as more controlled on foreign policy to signal predictability. Substantively the two differ little: on migration, internal security, purchasing power and EU competences their lines remain largely congruent. Differences are primarily in style and the pacing of public appearances.

The legal situation remains complex. A conviction that carries a disqualification effect could have different consequences depending on its duration and temporal scope. Final authorization of candidacies is ultimately overseen by the Conseil constitutionnel. Within the party, the RN is calculating several timelines: from a short-term change at the top of the ticket to the continuation of the campaign with Le Pen if judicial restrictions allow it or take effect with a delay.

For the French party system, the constellation increases pressure. The government camp and the opposition are testing their lines between legal criticism and political confrontation. Opponents of the RN warn of institutional risks should a candidate change be necessary during the heated campaign phase. At the same time, the RN’s own supporters expect clear guarantees on governance capability. So far, internal party discipline has prevented open ruptures; programmatic corrections are hard to detect, but a tight communication management is evident.

Internationally, diplomats and media are closely watching whether a personnel change during a legally charged phase would have repercussions for France’s European policy and security positions. Observers are particularly looking for possible shifts in cooperation with Brussels, in handling budgetary rules and on border and migration issues. Regardless of today’s ruling, the core of the RN’s strategy remains visible: secure continuity of messages — with Le Pen as the symbolic figure or Bardella as a rapidly deployable candidate.
