Presidential Election 2027: Waiting for Signals from the Centrist Camp – Braun-Pivet, Darmanin, and Borne Still Without Positioning

Paris – 30.06.2026: French politics is closely watching the centrist camp ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. The public support from government spokesperson Maud Bregeon for Édouard Philippe, the former Prime Minister and current Mayor of Le Havre, has brought new momentum to the political landscape. Philippe is increasingly seen as a serious candidate after receiving prominent support from within his own camp for the first time.

The focus is now on other key figures of the Macron movement who have so far avoided public positioning. Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the National Assembly since 2022, clearly distanced herself from offering an election endorsement after some critical remarks about the government’s administration in spring. Her interventions mainly concerned the importance of the legislature and the role of parliament in the political framework; a direct commitment to one of the possible candidates is absent. Observers interpret this restraint as part of a struggle for influence and self-assertion within the future power structure.

Gérald Darmanin, currently Interior Minister, has been regarded as an ambitious politician for years. In January, he suggested that a candidacy through internal party procedures was conceivable as long as he could contribute his programmatic priorities. However, he has so far expressed support for neither Édouard Philippe nor Prime Minister Gabriel Attal. Especially after Bregeon’s positioning, the question arises with which candidate Darmanin sees political common ground and how his decision could influence the majority relations within the centrist camp.

Élisabeth Borne, the former Prime Minister, also remains cautious. She has recently occasionally acted as a mediator between openly pro-Philippe and pro-Attal camps but has avoided any form of public partisanship. Her actions are interpreted as a search for the right timing or weighing continuity against renewal: The former head of government commands respect for her experience, and her final decision could be pivotal for the balance within the centrist block.

Developments in the Macron camp are a central issue for the upcoming primaries and the final candidate nomination. The hesitation of the leading figures reflects a strategic phase in which every public statement entails not only personal consequences but also significant impacts on the further course of the election campaign. Political observers expect that the situation will intensify in the coming weeks—especially as some of the prominent figures clearly take a position. The decisions of Braun-Pivet, Darmanin, or Borne could significantly influence the power balance between Philippe and Attal and thus reshape the starting position for the presidential election.
