Severe thunderstorms cause damage in Lyon and Saint-Etienne

Lyon – 09.08.2026: Severe thunderstorms struck parts of the Rhone Valley on Sunday, causing extensive damage in Lyon and Saint-Etienne. The storms moved through the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region during the afternoon and evening. According to Franceinfo, the two major cities were hit particularly hard.

No reliable overall assessment was available by Sunday evening. The responsible authorities had not initially released consolidated information either on the number of possible injuries or on the extent of damage to buildings, transport routes and utility networks. It was also not yet possible to reliably identify individual areas of concentrated damage based on the available information. The prefecture of the Loire department provided information on the severe weather situation and its development.

In densely built-up urban areas, severe thunderstorms can have considerable consequences within a short time. Intense rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems and flood basements, underpasses or lower-lying sections of roads.
