Syrian Authorities Report Arrests After Attacks During Macron’s Visit to Damascus

Damascus – 11/07/2026: Syria’s Interior Ministry has ordered the arrest of several suspects following two explosions in the capital. The attacks took place on 7 July near the Four Seasons Hotel, where French President Emmanuel Macron had previously stayed, as well as close to the Ministry of Tourism. According to official Syrian figures, at least 18 people were injured. A ministry spokesperson said coordinated raids were carried out on 9 and 10 July in several districts of Damascus.

According to state accounts, the suspected perpetrators are believed to belong to a cell with links to the so-called Islamic State. Authorities have not yet provided concrete evidence, names or nationalities. The interior minister announced that further information on identities, roles within the group and possible supporters would be released once the evaluation of evidence and interrogations had been completed. Investigators are also examining whether there were logistical helpers outside the capital and whether the two detonations were part of a broader series of planned attacks.

The security situation in Damascus is considered fragile despite the strong presence of police and intelligence services. In the past, various militias and underground networks have repeatedly carried out attacks in the metropolis. In view of the high-profile visit from Paris, central areas of the city were placed under increased security and roads were temporarily closed. Official Syrian sources stress that the arrests were the result of prolonged surveillance and technical analysis. No independently verifiable information is yet available on the scope and timing of the operations.

France has condemned the explosions. Paris said the president’s security was never at risk; the Elysee did not comment on operational details. Diplomatic sources said they were closely monitoring the investigation and were in contact with partners. French involvement in the Syrian investigation was not confirmed. Details of a possible cross-border support network also remain unclear.

Observers point out that attacks near government buildings and hotels are primarily aimed at public visibility. Choosing a location in the immediate vicinity of a high-ranking foreign guest gives perpetrators international attention without necessarily indicating a direct threat to the visit. Authorities have announced additional checks at sensitive points across the capital in the coming days. Casualty figures and the assessment of damage may still change as the investigation progresses.
