Two firefighters killed in major blaze near Bordeaux-Mérignac

Mérignac – July 22, 2026: A severe fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport claimed the lives of two firefighters. The two members of the Gironde Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene on Tuesday afternoon, July 21. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the deaths during government questions in the National Assembly. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially announced.

According to current information, the fire broke out early in the afternoon in a densely vegetated area near long-term parking lots, car dealerships and logistics sites. Thick black smoke was visible throughout the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Air traffic was also temporarily affected because the fire was close to the runway. Ground and air rescue forces attempted to prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding facilities.

According to Marc Vermeulen, head of the SDIS 33 fire service, the two firefighters were inside a rescue vehicle that was surrounded by flames during the initial phase of the firefighting operation. The exact circumstances have not yet been determined. The only certainty so far is that the fire spread with unusual intensity through dry vegetation.

About 120 firefighters, around 60 vehicles, as well as a helicopter and two firefighting aircraft from civil protection took part in the operation. By evening, the fire had been brought under control. According to preliminary figures from the command post, the blaze affected 26 hectares of land. However, the deaths of the two colleagues cast a shadow over the operation as firefighting efforts continued.

The Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to determine the origin of the fire and the circumstances under which the vehicle became trapped. Judicial authorities said that 25 investigators had been sent to the fire scene, supported by criminal forensic investigation experts. It has not yet been determined whether the fire was caused by human action, an accident or a criminal act.

Prefect Sophie Brocas expressed her condolences to the victims’ families, friends and firefighters in Gironde. Head of state Emmanuel Macron also offered condolences to the families. The city of Mérignac will mourn the two firefighters who died in the line of duty. Mayor Thierry Trijoulet also noted that the city is particularly vulnerable under the current dry summer conditions.

On the day of the fire, Gironde faced an extremely high risk of forest fires. However, the cause of the fire and the exact circumstances of the deaths of the two firefighters remain the subject of the ongoing investigation. Speculation should be avoided until the investigation results are released. For the Gironde fire service, the operation intended to protect a hazardous area is, above all, a profound personal loss.
