Two suspects remanded in custody after Fontainebleau forest fires

Fontainebleau – 17 July 2026: Following the severe forest fires in the Forêt de Fontainebleau, the judicial investigation has resulted in two charges and pre-trial detention. Prosecutors and investigators are also examining further fire sites and possible links. President Emmanuel Macron travelled to the town southeast of Paris on Thursday, July 16, 2026, to learn about the response operation and the consequences of the fires.

The two suspects are being prosecuted for destruction by fire. According to consistent media reports, one of them is a volunteer firefighter and the other a student; both are 18 years old. Investigators say they are believed to have acted independently of one another. Criminal responsibility has therefore not yet been conclusively established: pre-trial detention initially secures the proceedings while an investigating judge continues to examine the allegations.

On July 14, the public prosecutor’s office had already stated that a volunteer firefighter had admitted setting dry brushwood alight using a lighter and petrol. Another young man is said to have explained that he accidentally started a fire by throwing away a cigarette. These statements form part of the ongoing investigation; they do not yet permit a conclusive attribution of all fires in the forest area.

Since the major fire broke out on July 12, the Gendarmerie has mobilised around one hundred personnel in Seine-et-Marne. They supported firefighting efforts, roadblocks and criminal investigations. According to the Gendarmerie, around 800 firefighters were deployed. The combination of several fire locations, summer drought and proximity to transport routes significantly increased the demands on operational command and law enforcement.

Macron visited the operational command centre on July 16 and met local authority representatives and emergency responders. The president placed the visit in the context of an exceptionally intense wildfire season across the country. For the government, the case is therefore more than a local criminal proceeding: it concerns the protection of forests, the capacity of civil protection services and the prevention of human-caused fires in densely populated regions.

Politically, the incident increases pressure to expand prevention and monitoring at particularly vulnerable sites. The Forêt de Fontainebleau is an important state forest and recreational area in the Ile-de-France region. The case shows that wildfire protection depends not only on firefighting capacity, but also on access controls, public awareness, early investigations and an effective judicial response.

Whether further individuals bear criminal responsibility remains open. Media reports mention other people who were checked in connection with individual fire sites in addition to the two people in custody. As long as no charges have been brought or guilt has not been established in court, they are presumed innocent. The Fontainebleau public prosecutor’s investigation is intended in particular to determine which fires were started deliberately, through negligence or independently of one another.
