Two Trenitalia TGVs in Burgundy were stuck for more than twelve hours due to a technical fault – 841 passengers affected

Dijon – 30.05.2026: On the night of May 29 to 30, 2026, a serious incident occurred in rail transport between the departments of Aube and Côte-d’Or in Burgundy. Two Trenitalia-TGV trains stopped due to a technical fault and were blocked for over twelve hours. The trains in question were FR6658 and FR9296, both heading to Paris. In total, there were 841 passengers on the two trains.

The malfunction occurred shortly before midnight, around 11:45 p.m. The train crews reported a failure of technical systems, which forced both trains to stop while traveling between the departments of Aube and Côte-d’Or. Due to the location on an open section, the scale of the rescue and maintenance efforts was particularly challenging.

The responsible prefectures of both departments promptly coordinated the actions of local rescue services. Passengers were provided with water and basic equipment, while information channels were organized for them. Several emergency teams worked on site to stabilize the situation and ensure safety.

Train FR6658 initially traveled from Lyon to Paris, while FR9296 ran the route from Milan via Modane and Chambéry to Paris. Both trains belonged to high-speed long-distance lines, which made the prompt resolution of the fault extremely important.

Around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, the technical fault was resolved. Both trains continued their journey after a comprehensive safety check. Trenitalia has not yet provided detailed information about the exact cause but promised to strengthen maintenance measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The twelve-hour blockage caused significant delays in regional and interregional rail traffic. Routes in the southeastern part of France were particularly affected, also impacting subsequent trains and connections. Passengers were advised to contact Trenitalia and the station for current information regarding the schedule.

This incident highlights the importance of reliable infrastructure, especially for high-speed transport such as TGV lines. The cooperation between operators, rescue services, and authorities was highly appreciated by all involved. Trenitalia apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured its commitment to safety and customer service.

The incident is currently being investigated by the relevant authorities to identify possible vulnerabilities and implement preventive measures. For the affected passengers, the nine-hour wait under difficult conditions will undoubtedly remain memorable, as well as the coordinated actions of the rescuers at the scene.
