Paris – 20.07.2026: In the peloton, the major differences often become visible only when the legs are already heavy. Tadej Pogacar can still accelerate then, even though the group has been riding at a high pace for hours. Behind this seemingly effortless reserve is not a single secret number, but precisely managed training – especially in workload zones 2 and 3.
The classification from one to five categorizes exertion using power, heart rate, lactate values and breathing response. In the widely used five-zone model, Zone 2 represents controlled, predominantly aerobic sustained effort. The rider can maintain it for a long time without quickly becoming fatigued. It trains the ability to provide energy efficiently and remain stable during long races.
Zone 3 sits above it: the pace is considerably more demanding, but it is not yet a short all-out attack. Carbohydrate consumption rises here, the margin for error becomes smaller, and smooth pedaling becomes a technical task. This intensity can be decisive, especially on long climbs or in grueling chases, because it is closer to the real rhythm of a stage race than pure base riding.
For Pogacar, the crucial point is the relationship, not the raw number on the bike computer. His power values are far above those of recreational riders because of his exceptional physiology. What counts as manageable endurance work for him would already be an effort level that many others could sustain only briefly. Training zones must therefore be determined individually through tests and ongoing data.
The terminology can also easily cause confusion. Sports science uses three- and five-zone models whose numbers do not correspond directly. When analyzing race intensities, the UCI refers to threshold values: below the first threshold is easy work, between the thresholds is demanding sustained effort, and above them begins the high-intensity range. A Zone 2 label without stating the model used therefore says little on its own.
The benefit of this work does not necessarily show in the first explosive acceleration. Rather, it creates the foundation for still riding efficiently after four or five hours of racing, taking in food and holding position in the peloton. On the official route of the 2026 Tour de France, 53,950 meters of elevation gain add up; in this terrain, economical endurance becomes currency.
Pogacar’s strength in these ranges is therefore not a recipe to copy, but an indication of the logic of elite sport: control long efforts, preserve the metabolism and deploy high intensities strategically. Only when these layers fit together does a training zone become the race toughness that is visible in the mountains or in the finale.
