Wildfire in Gironde: Firefighters Battle Hidden Hotspots

Bordeaux – 25/07/2026: Since Wednesday, July 22, firefighters have been battling a major fire in Gironde. Even in areas where no open flames are visible, the situation remains dangerous. Embers and heat can persist below the surface for a long time. Dry vegetation and wind can then sometimes be enough to fuel the fire again.

At this stage, the work of emergency crews shifts from direct firefighting to the laborious task of securing the affected areas. Firefighting teams inspect the fire perimeter, look for smoke and check particularly vulnerable locations. Suspicious areas are opened up, watered and then inspected again. Only when the temperature has dropped sufficiently and no hidden hotspots can be found can the risk of a flare-up be reduced.

Embers in roots, tree stumps, layers of leaf litter and dead branches are especially persistent. Organic material can continue to burn unnoticed in the ground. When the wind picks up, fresh oxygen reaches such spots. Sparks and burning plant material can also be carried beyond the already extinguished perimeter, where they may ignite dry grass, bushes or undergrowth. Flames that appear to have been extinguished therefore do not necessarily mean that a fire is under control.

Mop-up operations require a great deal of personnel. Large areas must be systematically checked, while crews must also remain ready for possible new fire outbreaks. There is also the physical strain caused by heat, smoke and difficult terrain. The drier the soil and vegetation, the greater the effort needed to cool individual hotspots completely. Wind can undo progress already made within a short time.

Caution is also required outside the actual fire area. French authorities regularly point out that many vegetation fires are caused by human behavior. Discarded cigarettes, open flames, sparks from work or vehicles on dry grass can cause ignition. Access restrictions and prevention rules therefore apply in at-risk areas, with their scope depending on the current level of danger.

For residents, the ongoing safety operations mean that official instructions and possible closures must continue to be observed. Smoke should be reported, but a fire area must never be entered without authorization. Burned trees may be unstable, paths damaged and hotspots hidden beneath ash. In Gironde, emergency crews are therefore continuing to focus on close monitoring of the fire perimeter and the complete extinguishing of remaining heat.
