Wildfire in Lozere affects 320 hectares

Lozere – 10 August 2026: A vegetation fire has affected around 320 hectares in the southern French department of Lozere, according to Franceinfo. More than 400 firefighters remained deployed overnight into Monday to contain the flames and protect inhabited areas. Around 20 homes were evacuated as a precaution. There were initially no reports of injuries or damaged buildings.

The fire broke out on Monday. An initial situation report referred to more than 100 hectares of affected land, before the estimate later rose to 320 hectares. The figures refer to the area affected by the fire; they do not yet allow a final assessment of the extent to which vegetation and soil within that area were actually damaged.

The precautionary evacuations are intended to prevent residents from being endangered by a sudden change in wind direction or the rapid spread of flames. At the same time, access routes for fire engines must be kept clear and buildings near the fire area secured. It was initially unknown whether and when residents would be able to return to their homes.

Even when a fire front is no longer spreading rapidly, the situation remains demanding for emergency crews. Smouldering hotspots can persist in dry plant material or in the ground and flare up again in windy conditions. Firefighters therefore monitor the edges of the fire area, extinguish individual hotspots and observe areas where flying sparks could ignite new fires. In confusing or difficult-to-access terrain, this follow-up work ties up considerable resources.

Lozere is sparsely populated and characterised by extensive woodland, pasture and scrubland. During prolonged drought, a vegetation fire can spread rapidly across large areas there. At the same time, long distances, narrow roads and limited access to water complicate firefighting operations. Protecting scattered homes therefore often requires substantial personnel and logistical resources.

On 20 July, the prefecture had already ordered restrictions on certain agricultural activities because of the high wildfire risk. Such preventive rules are intended to prevent machinery, sparks or work involving open flames from igniting dry vegetation. They typically apply to activities in which an ignition source in the immediate vicinity of fields, forest edges or scrubland cannot be ruled out.

There was initially no reliable information on the cause of the current fire. It also remained unclear how long the operation would last and what damage the final assessment would show. Confirmed early on Monday morning were the affected area of around 320 hectares, the deployment of more than 400 firefighters and the precautionary evacuation of around 20 homes.
